2007 Steps to Recovery - This Year's Event was a HUGE Success!

InsideGroup

With wall to wall spectators and almost 30 clients participating, this year's Steps to Recovery Event surpassed all expectations.

The afternoon began with two goals: to raise awareness that recovery from a spinal cord injury is possible, and to raise the funds to purchase a Robomedica gait training system. By the end of the evening the results were phenomenal.

The first walk of the day included a 1/2 Mile walk that ended at the Project Walk Center front doors - Dan Cummings, program graduate, completed the walk in an amazing 44mins and 12 seconds! Three more long distance walking clients followed and were greeted by the cheers and support of hundreds of spectators. The next highlight included clients that completed a 1/4 Mile walk around the Project Walk Center. Many of these clients had improved so greatly in their training at Project Walk that they had graduated from the inside First Steps walk, to this longer, more intense walk. With the help of the event MC, Bob Lawrence, these clients were encouraged with a mix of emotions from the spectators to push themselves to reach further with every step they took.  Finally, the walks came to a culmination with the much anticipated First Steps Post Injury Walks.  Through a series of three groups, over 15 clients took steps after step in front of a group of over 700 very emotional supporters.  Some of these clients were taking steps for the very first time since sustaining a spinal cord injury which had left them with the prognosis that they may never walk again.  The goal of raising awareness that recovery from a spinal cord injury is possible was more than met; witnessing these walks proved that the possibility of recovery is undeniable.

The impression left after having the opportunity to watch these inspirational clients was instrumental in reaching our second goal.  With the help of Bob Lawrence, who so eloquently presented the need for funding to support the growth of the organization through the purchase of a Robomedica gait training system, we were able to move closer to this goal.  The final tally of money raised is still being processed, but we are confident that this piece of equipment will soon be in our roster of tools.
